| Luxinnovation and the Ministry of Culture, Higher Education and Research are organizing a workshop on ARTES 1 (Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems), the European Space Agency (ESA) programme for preliminary studies and investigations in the field of satellite communications. |
| |
| This event, which is organized within the AeroSpace Cluster initiative, will be held on Friday, 21 September 2007 from 10:00 to 12:00. |
|
|
The goal of ESA is to cooperate with European service sectors and industries in order to initiate innovative, high technology driven projects in the field of communications, thereby increasing significantly the competitiveness of EU companies.
|
Objectives
|
ARTES 1 has two major objectives:
|
- Perform studies and evaluate needs of specific sectors of activity together with all possible partners on new technologies in the field of satellite communications;
- Define together with potential partners the necessary steps to execute projects required by European industries.
|
The objective of the workshop is to present the ARTES 1 programme, its current activities on strategy and applications and existing opportunities for Luxembourg.

Benefits

Examples of benefits for the service sector (especially banks and insurance companies) include:

- Secure business connections over great distances, for example via Virtual Private Networks (VPN);
- Earth observation images (Satellite images) that can be used to assess risks in all areas of the globe (e.g. flooding, landslides etc.);
- Establish an independent backup for all telecom services in the case of an outage of earthbound infrastructures.

The general benefits for companies could include:
