Dominated by the metal and chemical industries, the sector has a strong international orientation and exports the lion’s share of its production. With 32,200 employees, the sector represents 8.3% of total national employment and 4.6% of the national added value.

The sector’s enterprises, of which some have also established their R&D centre in Luxembourg, benefit from the strategic position, neutrality and efficient logistics infrastructure of Luxembourg at the centre of Europe.

The sector excels in several of the Key Enabling Technologies that are high on the EU’s current agenda for enhancing innovation and competitiveness, notably advanced manufacturing, advanced materials and nanomaterials.

Luxembourg’s strong track record in the manufacture and processing of many types of innovative materials is well proven with internationally renowned companies being located in Luxembourg for many years. Such materials include, for example, plastics & polymers, metals, composites, minerals, glass, wood and paper, which are produced and processed in support of many business sectors.

The implementation of new, innovative and improved production technologies to boost productivity and competitiveness at the international level is a central consideration of the manufacturing sector.

Its main fields of interest and expertise include:

– Highly automated production lines

– Cyber-physical manufacturing systems

– Robotics

– Additive manufacturing

– Reduction of energy consumption and waste production
