Scientists at the University of Luxembourg in collaboration with Artec 3D are working on the future of 3D scanning. In 2017 their project was unveiled to the public, with volunteers coming to the scanning booth at that time located in the cafeteria on the first floor of the Maison du Savoir in Belval. Staff, students and curious members of the public volunteered to be scanned from head to toe. The data gathered is now allowing scientists from SnT to develop new mathematical methods for modelling the human body shape in 3D.
Contribute to the research
Currently, state of the art 3D scanners and software can facilitate the creation of accurate digital 3D models of the body only if the subject is wearing skin-tight clothing. This has obvious drawbacks for everyday applications, such as in healthcare. A team of SnT scientists, led by Dr Djamila Aouada, have set themselves the challenge of being able to arrive at accurate estimations of body shape regardless of clothing.
They have already made good progress, but they still need more volunteers. This is why Luxinnovation decided to get in on the act to both offer themselves up as “guinea pigs” but also to promote the project and encourage others. Luxinnovation employees took the plunge and donated their bodies to science (for about 5 minutes) in the Artec Shapify 3D scanning Booth currently located at the Maison Du Nombre in Belval. In total, 45 employees from Luxinnovation agree to be scanned and 38 of them took part in the research.
The project scientists are still busy collecting data for this research, and if you would like to help them make the next step in 3D body modelling, you can volunteer to be scanned in 3D. The process takes 20 minutes, and you will go home with a 3D digital selfie, electronic access to your 3D data and a set of free sports clothing (worn during the scanning process). The scanning takes place at the Maison du Nombre on the University’s Belval Campus. Exceptionally, the team will also be taking scans at the Belle Etoile from the from 7th to 25th August.
