On November 15, 2017, members of the Luxembourg AutoMobility Cluster, managed by Luxinnovation, participated in a fascinating visit to the SmartFactoryKL in Kaiserslautern organised by FEDIL (The Voice of Luxembourg’s Industry) a multi-sectoral federation of companies. It represents companies in the industrial, construction and business services sectors.

With the automotive industry undergoing a radical transformation due to increasing demand for critical factors such as ubiquitous, inexpensive connectivity and instrumentation from machines on the shop floor to the finished product,  it is important to view such smart factory example to drive  Luxembourg’s automobility   ambitions forwards.

SmartFactoryKL is a network of more than 45 member organisations from industry and research. These partners perform research and development projects related to Industry 4.0 and the factory of the future all the way up to industrial implementation.

FEDIL organised the event and many AutoMobility cluster members such as CEBI, Goodyear, FANUC, and AMOVA, participated in the visit.

The centrepiece is the manufacturer-independent demonstrator and research platform – unique in the world, created by the SmartFactoryKL partner consortium.  It is used by researchers and industry to develop and test innovative concepts paving the way for more flexible, more efficient production lines.

The economy of the 21st century is characterised by global competition, ever-shorter innovation and product life cycles, as well as a growing demand for individualised products. To remain competitive under these conditions, Luxembourg based manufacturers must adopt flexible and variable factory systems. SmartFactoryKL provides the right support to transform our industry so that it can remain competitive and sustainable.
