Using 32 performance indicators across 11 issue categories, the 2020 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks 180 countries on environmental health and ecosystem vitality. According to the study, “these indicators provide a gauge at a national scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy targets”.

Luxembourg 2nd best environmental performance

Luxembourg is in second place in the overall ranking, after Denmark and before Switzerland, the UK and France. All top 10 countries are located in Europe, Japan being the highest ranked non-European country in 12th place.

Luxembourg ranks 2nd in the world in the field of ecosystem vitality. Among the subcategories in this field, it ranks 1st in the world for pollution emissions, 6th for water resources and 7th for climate change.

In the field of environmental health, the country is in 7th place. It ranks 7th for heavy metals, 9th for sanitation and drinking water and 11th for air quality.
