On 30 November 2023, the European Commission officially inaugurated the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU). The Chips JU will become the main implementer of the Chips for Europe Initiative, which has an expected total budget €15.8 billion until 2030. The initiative will bridge the gap between research, innovation and production in order to facilitate the commercialisation of innovative ideas.

First calls for proposals

Following the official launch, the European Commission has just announced the first calls for innovative pilot lines to be funded under the programme. For those, the Commission will make available €1.67 billion in EU funding, which should be matched by Member States funding in order to reach a total of €3.3 billion. With this first set of calls, the EC is looking for proposals on:

  • Fully depleted silicon on insulator, towards 7 nanometers
  • Leading-edge nodes below 2 nanometers
  • Heterogeneous system integration and assembly
  • Wide bandgap semiconductors

The deadline for submitting proposals is 29 February 2024, at 17:00 CET.

More information about these first calls as well as the amended Chips JU 2023 Work Programme can be found on the Chips JU website.
