June 2020

Dear reader,

The coronavirus outbreak disrupted our habits and put our economy to a certain level on hold. Yet Horizon 2020 did not halt, nor did Luxinnovation. The EU R&D and Innovation support team responded present to support Luxembourg actors in their application processes. Indeed, the European Commission met the crisis with several initiatives such as postponing deadline to give time to consortia to adapt and finalise their project proposal, setting up a Q&A for legal and financial Horizon 2020 matters allowing organisations to adapt their projects to the crisis, publishing specific calls and expressions of interest covering different aspects of the Covid-19 crisis or organising a #EuvsVirus Matchathon.

Following the publication of the Green Deal Strategy, the European Commission will also publish new calls for proposals responding to the new challenges highlighted in this strategy. They will be published under Horizon 2020 and help mobilise and shape research and innovation for a green and just transition and recovery of the European Union. With an innovative co-creative approach, the European Commission has run a stakeholder feedback survey on the calls (you can have a look at them here), with feedback being collected to improve the calls text.
The indicative timeline for the Green Deal call foresees that it should open mid-September, close to the all-virtual Research&Innovation days, with a deadline end of January 2021.

This will very likely be the last call of Horizon 2020, and indeed discussions and preparation of the upcoming framework programme for innovation and research, Horizon Europe, are resuming. Rapid advancements are made regarding the European Partnerships. Discussions over the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework are, to this date, still ongoing, and a new budget proposition (Europe's moment: Repair and Prepare for the Next Generation) has been made with an amount of €94.4 billion for Horizon Europe (see the different budget allocations here). The agreement on the overall MFF, and of its share for Research and Innovation, will also set the level of ambition of Horizon Europe, and once this key step is achieved, everything will progress very quickly.

So stay in contact!
