Creativity has always been central to Luxembourg’s economic development. The roots of the creative industries can be traced back to the creation of Radio Luxembourg – today media giant RTL Group – in the 1920s and the launch of media and communications venture SES, the world's only multi-orbit satellite player, in 1985. Film production is a major business here, and since the 1990s, co-productions with foreign companies have regularly attracted film stars to the country for shootings of international blockbusters.
Today, the creative industries ecosystem mapping produced by Luxinnovation with data from December 2020 shows that the sector includes over 2,400 companies.
The creative industries sector includes 12 different industries with close links to each other:
60% of the creative industries companies in Luxembourg are active in the fields of architecture, film and audiovisual, and marketing and communication.
The creative economy is a young sector, with 50% of today’s companies being incorporated less than 9 years ago. According to Luxinnovation’s estimates, the sector employs approximately 14,600 people. The large majority work in companies with 10 or less staff members.
